What salt-air does to ordinary blinds
Salt-air humidity is microscopically corrosive. Sodium chloride molecules carried in coastal air settle on every surface and slowly attack any material that’s not specifically resistant to them.
Cotton, linen and most natural-fabric blinds absorb the moisture. Within months you start to see uneven fading where the salt has concentrated; within a year there’s visible water marking; within 18 months the fabric is showing wear in the seams and the lining is starting to discolour. Roman blinds with cotton fabrics fail particularly fast because the fabric is layered – moisture gets trapped between face and lining.
Wooden Venetian blinds warp. The slats are typically 2-3mm thick, painted on the visible face, but the cut edges are usually unprotected. Salt air enters through the cut edges and the timber expands and contracts asymmetrically. Within 12-18 months you start to see slats that don’t sit flat when closed – they bow visibly and can’t be tilted to a clean line.
Metal mechanisms corrode. Standard steel chains, brackets and weights start to show rust within 6-12 months in seafront properties. The blind still functions but it looks tired and the corrosion eventually stains the wall behind.
