Privacy at eye level, daylight everywhere else

Cafe Style Shutters in Kent

Cafe style shutters cover only the lower portion of the window – typically the bottom half – leaving the upper window completely exposed. The name comes from European pavement cafes where you want to obscure the view of diners’ tables from passing footfall while keeping the upper window clear for daylight. We fit cafe style across Kent in period high streets, ground-floor terraces, kitchen windows, and anywhere the lower window needs covering and the upper doesn’t.

The logic behind half-height shutters

When Less Coverage Is More

Most window dressing assumes you want to cover the whole window. Cafe style starts from the opposite assumption: most of the time, only the lower half needs covering. Privacy concerns are at eye level. Direct sun glare is at eye level. The view people don’t want to lose – sky, treetops, building tops – is at the top of the window.

Half coverage solves the privacy and glare problem without sacrificing the upper view. In a Victorian or Georgian property with a beautiful upper sash featuring stained glass or original glazing bars, cafe style preserves the architectural feature while still giving you the practical privacy you need at street level.

It’s also the lightest visual treatment in the shutter range. A full-height shutter is a substantial visual mass on a window. Tier on tier is similar (the upper tier exists even if it’s open). Cafe style adds only a half-height frame and panel, leaving everything above eye level visually clear. In a small or low-ceilinged room, that visual difference matters.

How tall to make the cafe shutter

The Top-Edge Height Decision

There isn’t a fixed cafe height. It varies by window, room and street. We discuss this at every survey and the answer ranges from about 80cm above sill to 1.4 metres above sill depending on the situation.

The default for most installations is around 1.0 to 1.2 metres from sill – just above the average adult eye level when standing at the window. This blocks visual access from a passing pedestrian’s normal line of sight while leaving everything above their head clear. We use this default for ground-floor street-facing rooms in terraces.

Shorter cafe heights (80-95cm) work where you want minimum coverage – perhaps in a kitchen window where you mostly need privacy from the garden seating area but don’t mind people seeing you preparing food. Taller cafe heights (1.3-1.4 metres) work where the road outside is elevated, where there’s a tall pavement or wall outside the window, or where the room is close to a busy footpath and you want maximum eye-level coverage.

The other factor is the window itself. Sash windows with a meeting rail at a specific height usually look best with the cafe shutter top edge aligned to the meeting rail – it reads as part of the original window architecture rather than an arbitrary horizontal added on top. We measure the meeting rail position at survey and recommend accordingly.

Specific room and property types

Where Cafe Style Shines

Period high street terraces are the dominant use case in Kent. In Rochester High Street, Tunbridge Wells’ Mount Sion, central Faversham and central Canterbury, ground-floor front rooms have direct visibility from busy pavement traffic. Cafe style protects the room without obscuring the upper sash, which often features the property’s most decorative original glazing.

Kitchens are the second most common installation. In modern kitchens with a window over the sink, you typically want privacy at counter level (where you stand) but light from the upper window. Cafe style does this neatly. We often pair cafe style in the kitchen window with full coverage shutters elsewhere in the house.

Bay windows on busy roads work too. Each bay section gets its own cafe-height shutter, with the upper bay left open. Particularly common in Edwardian semis along busy A-roads in Maidstone, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells.

Where cafe style isn’t right: bedrooms (you usually want bedroom blackout, which means full coverage at night), bathrooms (privacy from the outside is usually needed for the whole window), and any window that’s not directly overlooked by passers-by or neighbours.

Default is around 1.0 to 1.2 metres from sill, which covers eye level for most adults. Shorter for shorter sash windows or where you want more upper window exposed; taller for very tall windows or rooms close to a road.

Yes – we can add a matching upper shutter as a tier on tier conversion at a later date if you decide you want full coverage. The original cafe shutter stays in place and we add the upper tier above it.

Yes, particularly well in ground-floor bays facing pavements. The cafe height covers the lower part of each bay section, leaving the upper bay exposed to sky and light.

Installation time depends on the number of windows and complexity of your project. Most single-window installations take 2-4 hours, whilst multiple windows may require a full day. We’ll provide an accurate timeframe during your free consultation and work around your schedule.

Usually yes, by around 30-40%, because they cover roughly half the window area with half the frame and panel material. The job size still affects the absolute price.
