Plantation Shutters Chatham

Made to measure, fitted by a team based two miles up the road, not a call centre booking a subcontractor.

We are The VIP Shutter Co. Our workshop is in Rochester, close enough that Chatham is one of the towns we know best rather than one we simply cover on a list. From the terraces near Luton Road to the newer apartments at Chatham Maritime, we have measured and fitted more windows here than we could easily count.

Every shutter is cut to your exact window. Nothing is trimmed down on the day to make it fit. See our full range of shutter styles if you want a look before you book.

No obligation. No hard sell. Just an honest measure and a written quote.

Chatham homeowners increasingly choose plantation shutters over curtains or blinds — and it’s not hard to see why. A well-fitted shutter transforms the character of a room, gives you precise control over light and privacy, and adds something that no off-the-shelf blind ever quite manages: a sense of permanence.

The VIP Shutter Co is based in Rochester, less than two miles from Chatham town centre. We supply and fit made-to-measure plantation shutters across the Medway towns, and Chatham is one of the areas we know best. If you’re looking for shutters in Chatham, you’re looking at a local business with a local fitter — not a national call centre booking a contractor.

Shutters That Suit Chatham's Housing Stock

Chatham has one of the widest mixes of housing in Medway, and the shutter that suits your home depends on which part of the town you’re in.

Victorian terraces near Luton Road and Princes Park tend to have proportions that don’t match a standard size, tall narrow windows in some streets, wider ones a few doors down. Everything we fit is made to measure, so this is rarely a problem, and solid panel shutters suit the period character of these streets particularly well.

Bay windows turn up often across the older parts of town, and they’re one of the jobs we’re asked about most. A bay needs each panel angled to match its own facet while still operating independently, which is fiddly to get right and very obvious when it’s wrong. See our bay window shutters page for more on how we approach it.

Ground floor rooms on busier roads, Chatham Hill, Albany Road, and the streets running behind the High Street, are a common request for a different reason: privacy from passers by without losing the light. A cafe style shutter covers the bottom half only, so you get both.

Rows in Walderslade and the larger detached homes towards Hempstead Valley usually have standard casement windows, which suit full height shutters in engineered MDF, a practical option for a straightforward rectangular window.

Newer apartments and townhouses at Chatham Maritime and around Dockside tend to have larger windows and sit close to the river, so we usually recommend waterproof ABS or MDF over hardwood, since they cope better with the extra humidity a riverside spot brings. If your home there has an extension, orangery or garden room, our guide on shutters for extensions and garden rooms is worth a read.

Materials and Finish Options

Every shutter is cut to your precise window dimensions. We don’t adjust standard sizes — everything is made to measure from the start.

Hardwood — Sustainably sourced real wood. Warmest look and feel, best for period properties. Available in any paint colour or stained finish, including bespoke RAL shades if you want to match existing woodwork exactly.

Engineered MDF — The most practical choice for most homes. Dimensionally stable, takes paint exceptionally well, and at a lower price point than solid wood without compromising on appearance.

Waterproof ABS — Fully waterproof. The right choice for bathrooms, kitchens, en-suites, and rooms with high humidity such as riverside properties. Identical appearance to painted MDF but will never warp or swell.

Louvre sizes: 47mm, 63mm, 76mm, and 89mm. Larger louvres let more light through when open and give a more contemporary feel. Smaller louvres suit traditional sash windows and period interiors. We’ll advise which works best for your specific window during the survey.

Tilt rod options: central rod (traditional look) or hidden tilt (clean, contemporary — the louvres adjust via a small magnet mechanism with no visible rod).

Why Chatham Customers Choose VIP

We’re neighbours, not a national number. Our workshop is in Rochester, a couple of miles away, so when you book a survey you get a local fitter who already knows the area, not a subcontractor working from a call centre’s diary.

Over 100 five star reviews across Kent, with new ones added from Chatham and the wider Medway towns regularly.

No commission for our team. Nobody on our staff is paid more for pushing a pricier material or style, so the recommendation you get is about your windows, not our figures.

A five year warranty on every job, covering the shutters themselves and how they’re fitted.

How the Process Works

We keep things simple and straightforward.

1. Book a free home survey. One of our team visits your property in Chatham, measures every window you’re considering, and walks you through style and material options in your own home. No pressure, no pushy sales. We’ll leave you with a written quote.

2. Confirm your order. When you’re ready to go ahead, we return to template the windows — this is a second precise measurement that goes directly to the factory. We take a deposit at this stage and your shutters go into production.

3. Installation. Lead times are typically 4–6 weeks from order. Our fitter carries out the installation, checks every panel, and leaves the room clean and tidy. We take away all packaging.

5-year warranty on all shutters supplied and fitted by The VIP Shutter Co.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prices depend on window size, style, and material. As a rough guide, a standard-sized bedroom window in engineered MDF full height shutters starts from around £350–£450 fitted. A full living room bay in hardwood can be £1,200–£2,500 depending on configuration. We provide itemised written quotes after measuring — there are no surprises on the day.

From survey to installation, allow 4–6 weeks. The fitting itself typically takes half a day for a two or three-room job. We work around you and won’t leave until everything is right.

Yes — everything is made to measure. We regularly work in the Edwardian and Victorian terraces around Luton, Princes Park, and the older streets in the town centre where window proportions vary considerably. Nothing is off the shelf.

All shutters fitted by The VIP Shutter Co come with a 5-year warranty covering manufacturing defects and any issues with the installation.

Yes, and it’s something we do regularly across Chatham and the Medway towns. Bay window shutters are made in angled panels that follow the facets of the bay. Each panel operates independently. We template bay windows with extra care to make sure every angle is correct before the order goes to the factory.

We offer six styles as standard, all made to measure for your exact window dimensions.
