The heritage shutter style with near-total blackout
Solid Panel Shutters In Kent
Solid panel shutters are sometimes called Victorian shutters, sometimes blackout shutters, sometimes solid wood shutters – all describe the same product. Hardwood panels (no louvres) hinged into a frame, closing to give near-total light blocking and the strongest privacy of any shutter style we make. They were the original British internal shutter, predating louvred plantation styles by over two centuries. We hand-make them in Kent using period-correct construction methods.

Barry and Alex come and fitted my shutters, no mess at all, you would never of known they had been. My curtain poles were close to the shutters, so I was unable to open my shutters fully. After a day I had decided a wanted my curtain pole moved. Messaged Barry and they were moved in a few day, again without any problems. I am now hoping to have the thermal blinds at the back of my house. Construction details that distinguish authentic from generic
What Makes a Real Georgian Solid Panel
Modern reproduction solid panel shutters can range from broadly Georgian-styled to genuinely period-correct. The difference is in three details.
First, the panel construction itself. A real Georgian solid shutter is a framed-and-panelled hardwood assembly – vertical stiles, horizontal rails, with the panel itself fielded (raised and bevelled) to give the front face a three-dimensional profile. Cheap reproductions use flat plywood with a stuck-on moulding to imitate the field. We use full framed-and-panelled construction with hand-cut fielding on premium specifications.
Second, the timber. Genuine Georgian shutters used dense hardwoods – oak, mahogany, walnut – because the panels were structural and needed to handle the weight without warping. Modern softwoods or engineered woods can imitate the look but won’t carry the weight or last the century. Our hardwood specifications follow period practice.
Third, the hardware. Original Georgian shutters hung on hand-forged iron hinges with butterfly-shaped knuckles, latched with surface-mounted iron bolts. Modern reproductions often use cast aluminium painted black to imitate iron. We supply genuine forged or cast iron hardware on heritage specifications, with the option to age the finish for properties where the period look matters.
Across our Kent installations, the customers who choose solid panel are usually in Georgian properties (Rochester high street, central Faversham, parts of Canterbury, the older streets of Sevenoaks) or in modern bedrooms where blackout is the primary concern.
Period-correct hinges, latches and fixings
The Hardware That Makes The Difference
Solid panels are heavy. A pair of fielded hardwood panels for a typical Georgian sash window weighs 8-12kg per side. Cheap shutter hardware – lightweight cast aluminium hinges – sags within a year or two under that weight. The visible result is panels that drop slightly out of true and rub against the frame at the bottom.
We use heavy-duty hinges as standard on solid panel installations. Three hinges per panel rather than two, with cast iron or solid brass construction depending on the period style. The cost is small (£20-40 per opening) but the longevity is dramatically different.
Latches matter too. Original Georgian shutters used surface-mounted iron bolts that drop into a fixed catch. Modern equivalents include hidden magnetic catches (cleanest visually), spring-loaded ball catches (silent operation), and traditional iron drop bolts (period-correct). We discuss the choice at survey.
How dark a closed solid panel actually makes the room
The Blackout Function
Light blocks through the wood itself, completely. The panel material is a 12-15mm hardwood board (or framed-and-panelled assembly of similar thickness). No light passes through. So the question of how dark the room gets is really a question of where the gaps are.
The main light leak paths are: the small gap where the panel meets the frame on the hinge side (typically 2-3mm); the gap where the two panels meet at the centre stile (typically 1-2mm); and the gap at the top of the panel where it meets the head of the frame (typically 1-2mm). In total this allows a thin halo of light around the closed shutter, visible in a darkened room.
For total daytime blackout (for shift workers, migraine sufferers, or daytime nappers) we offer side channels – slim aluminium tracks running up the sides of the window opening that the panel edge slides into. These eliminate the side gaps entirely. Combined with a snug recess fit and a proper bottom seal, the result is as close to total dark as a window covering gets.
For most bedroom installations side channels aren’t needed. The standard panel-to-frame fit gives 95-98% light blocking, which is more than enough for normal sleep.

why choose us
Why Choose The VIP Shutter Co
Choosing a made to measure window treatment is a long term investment, and the company you trust to deliver it matters just as much as the product itself. Here is why Kent homeowners, from period townhouses in Rochester to coastal properties in Folkestone, continue to choose The VIP Shutter Co year after year.
Carpenter Led Installation
Our founder, Barry, is a qualified carpenter with more than 25 years on the tools. Every shutter is scribed, shimmed, and finished to a cabinetmaker’s standard, which is an attention to detail that mass market shutter companies rarely match.
20+ years of experience
We have fitted shutters in every style of Kent home, from Medway terraces to Tunbridge Wells Victorians. We know what works and we will tell you if something does not.
Demonstrable Energy Efficiency
Independent testing has shown that a well fitted plantation shutter can cut heat loss through a window by up to 52 per cent. For a family with large bay windows or a period home with single glazing, the savings on heating bills can be considerable year on year.
Genuinely Local, Not a National Franchise
We are a small family team in Rochester who have measured, fitted, and serviced thousands of windows across Kent. We understand period sashes in Faversham, conservation area rules in Tunbridge Wells, and the particular demands of coastal properties from Whitstable to Folkestone.
solid panel SHUTTERS
Perfect Rooms for Solid Panel Shutters
Solid panel shutters work brilliantly in every room of your home.
Period properties. Solid panel was the original British shutter. In Georgian and early Victorian houses, especially in Kent’s market towns and naval ports, they are often the historically correct choice.
Bedrooms with blackout requirements. Where you want a properly dark room for sleeping (parents of young children know this well), solid panels deliver. No need to layer up with blackout blinds or thermal curtains.
Street-facing ground-floor rooms. Where security and privacy are higher priorities than fine-tuned daylight control, solid panels close the room off completely.
Front halls and stairwells. Solid panels suit narrow, tall windows where louvres can look fussy.
Even in bathrooms, solid panel shutters provide privacy whilst allowing you to control ventilation, and the solid hardwood stands up well to moisture when properly treated.
