Plantation shutters for box, splayed, angled and curved bays

Bay Window Shutters In Kent

Bay window shutters are the largest single shutter project in most homes. A typical Edwardian or Victorian bay has three to five sections, each requiring its own panel set, with mitred frame members at the angles where the sections meet. The math has to be exact: louvres need to align horizontally across all the sections, panels need to clear each other when opening, and the mitre angles need to match the bay’s actual geometry rather than the drawing’s. We’ve fitted bay window shutters across hundreds of Kent properties – here’s how we approach the four bay shapes you’ll find in the county.

Bay Window Shutters in Kent

Bay windows are one of the most striking architectural features a home can have, projecting outward from the wall in a series of angled panels that flood a room with natural light. They are a defining characteristic of period homes across Kent, and they deserve a window covering that does them justice rather than hiding them behind a curtain rail.

Bay window shutters are the only window treatment that follows the shape of the bay properly. Each panel is measured and built to the exact angle and dimensions of that section of the window, giving you a seamless, symmetrical finish that enhances the whole room. You can adjust each section independently for light and privacy, and because the shutters sit cleanly within the frame, your bay window becomes one of the most impressive features in your home rather than a practical problem to be solved.

The right fit for every bay, whatever the shape.

The Four Bay Shapes

Box bay: Three flat sections meeting at right angles, the most common bay shape across Kent and the most straightforward to shutter.

Splayed bay: Three sections like a box bay but with angled corners rather than 90-degree ones, common in Edwardian and inter-war homes across Kent’s suburbs.

Angled bay: A larger, multi-faceted bay with four or five sections, often found in grander Victorian properties in areas like Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks.

Curved (bow) bay: A continuous arc rather than flat sections, the rarest and most complex bay shape to shutter, typically found in Regency and Georgian homes.

What we measure and check at every bay survey

Bay Window Survey Checklist

A bay window survey takes 30-45 minutes for a typical bay, longer for unusual or complex bays. Here’s the checklist we work through:

Bay shape identification (box, splayed, angled, curved). Section count and individual section widths (we measure each section across the top, middle and bottom because they’re not always parallel). Bay angle measurement at each corner using an angle gauge – we don’t trust drawings or assume standard angles. Sill height variation across sections (some bays have stepped sills). Head height variation (older bays sometimes settle and the head isn’t level across the full bay). Reveal depth at each section (older bays sometimes have varying reveal depths).

From those measurements we produce a bay shutter design with section-by-section panel sizing, mitre angles cut to actual measurements, and louvre alignment calculations. Manufacture then produces the panels to those exact specifications. Install fits them with on-site tuning to handle any variation we couldn’t capture from measurements alone.

The whole process takes 6-8 weeks from survey to install for a standard bay. Curved bays add 1-2 weeks for the bespoke design stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A box bay has 90-degree corners – the front of the bay is parallel to the wall it projects from. A splayed bay has angled corners (typically 30-45 degrees) – the front face is parallel to the wall but the side faces angle outward to meet it.

Yes, typically 20-40% more, because of the additional frame work at the bay angles, the mitre cuts, and the panel-by-panel sizing for each section. Curved bays cost more again because of the bespoke geometry.

Yes. Each bay section gets its own panel run (or pair of panels), and the runs connect at the bay angles via mitred frame members. The louvres across all the sections are calibrated to align horizontally for a consistent visual line.

Yes but the panels are made shorter and there are more of them – the curve is approximated by a series of narrow flat panels. Smooth curves require the most panels; gentle curves require fewer.
