Plantation Shutters Broadstairs

Made to measure, fitted by our own team, and built to cope with a seafront address.

We are The VIP Shutter Co, a family run shutter and blind company based in Rochester. Broadstairs is one of the Thanet towns we visit every week, from the clifftop villas above Viking Bay to the streets around Dickens House and the newer housing towards Haine Road.

Every shutter starts with a home visit. We measure your windows by hand, show you real samples of wood, MDF and waterproof ABS in your own light, and give you a written price before we leave. See our full range of shutter styles if you want a look first.

There is no charge and no obligation. One of our team drives out from Rochester, usually within the hour, to measure every window you are interested in and talk through your options.

We bring physical samples of every material and colour, because a photo on a screen never quite matches how a shutter looks against your own walls and light. By the end of the visit you will have exact measurements, a material recommendation for your property, and a price in writing.

Broadstairs is the most characterful of the Thanet coastal towns, and its housing reflects that — Victorian seafront villas along the clifftops and Viking Bay, terraced housing in the town centre and around Dickens House, interwar and postwar housing on the Ramsgate Road and the Margate Road corridors, and the properties in the Kingsgate and North Foreland area.

The VIP Shutter Co is based in Rochester and covers Broadstairs as part of our regular Kent installation schedule. We supply and fit bespoke made-to-measure plantation shutters across Broadstairs and the surrounding area. Every shutter is measured in your home, manufactured to those exact dimensions, and fitted by our own team.

Shutters That Suit Broadstairs's Housing Stock

Broadstairs has a real mix of homes, and the right shutter depends on what kind of house you have.

Victorian and Edwardian villas along the clifftops, Viking Bay and the streets near Dickens House usually have tall sash windows and deep bays. Full height shutters or tier on tier shutters in hardwood suit these best, and we cut every panel to match the exact angles of a bay window rather than fitting a flat panel across the front.

Terraced houses in the town centre, close to the harbour, often have smaller street-facing windows. A cafe style shutter covers the bottom half of the window, so you keep your privacy from passers-by while still getting daylight through the top.

1930s and post-war homes further back from the sea, around Reading Street and St Peter’s, tend to have standard casement windows that suit full height shutters in engineered MDF, which is a more affordable option than hardwood for a straightforward rectangular window.

Newer builds towards Haine Road and Pyson’s Road usually have larger, plainer windows. Full height shutters in engineered MDF or waterproof ABS work well here, and if you have an unusual shape such as an arched or angled window, we can build to it with custom-shaped shutters.

Not sure which fits your house? Tell us the property type when you book, and we will bring the right samples.

Materials and Finish Options

Every style above is available in three core materials, and which one we recommend depends on the room and how exposed the window is to the weather.

Hardwood. A natural grain and a warm finish. This is the material most Broadstairs period properties are built for, and it takes paint or stain equally well.

Engineered MDF. Stable, good value, and the right choice for most ordinary rooms that are not exposed to damp or direct sun.

Waterproof ABS. Fully moisture resistant, so it will not swell, warp or discolour. This is what we fit in bathrooms and conservatories, and it is also our usual recommendation for any Broadstairs home close enough to the seafront to catch salt air on the windows.

Louvres come in four sizes, 47mm, 63mm, 76mm and 89mm, and you can choose a central tilt rod or a hidden tilt mechanism for a cleaner look. If you want more detail on how the three materials compare, read our guide on choosing the right material for your shutters.

Why Broadstairs Homeowners Choose VIP

We measure and recommend per property, not per postcode. Two houses on the same Broadstairs street can need completely different shutters depending on their age and how exposed they are. We do not sell a single template solution.

Local reviews, not just national ones. We have over 100 five star reviews across Kent, with more added from Thanet every month.

No commission for our team. Nobody on our staff earns extra for pushing you towards a more expensive material or style, so the recommendation you get is about your windows, not our sales figures.

A five year warranty on every job, covering both the shutters themselves and how they are fitted.

How the Process Works

Free home survey. We visit, measure every window precisely, and bring a full sample kit. Usually around an hour for a typical Broadstairs home.

Order confirmation. You approve the quote, pay a deposit, and we start production. Every shutter is built to your exact measurements, so nothing is cut down on the day.

Installation. Our own fitters, not subcontractors, install your shutters. Most homes with two or three rooms are finished in half a day.

Allow 5 to 7 weeks from survey to installation. Every job carries a 5-year warranty covering manufacturing and fitting.

Yes. We regularly fit shutters in Ramsgate, Margate and the surrounding villages as part of the same visiting schedule. See our page on shutters across Kent for the full area we cover, or call us and we will confirm straight away.

Yes, if you choose the right material. Waterproof ABS will not swell, warp or discolour in salty, damp air, which is why we recommend it for most seafront and clifftop properties in Broadstairs. Hardwood and MDF are better suited to rooms further back from the sea. Read more in our guide to the best shutters for coastal homes.

Both work well, and it often comes down to the room and your budget. Shutters last longer and cope better with damp, salty air over time. If you want to compare the two, see our made to measure blinds in Kent page.
