Folkestone has undergone more architectural transformation in the last 20 years than almost any other town in Kent. The Creative Quarter and the Harbour Arm have brought genuine regeneration to parts of the town, and this sits alongside substantial Victorian and Edwardian housing stock through the Sandgate Road area and the Cheriton Road corridor, interwar semis spreading inland, and the clifftop properties along the Leas that are among the most spectacular in the county.

The VIP Shutter Co covers Folkestone from our Rochester base — around 45 minutes along the M20. We supply and fit bespoke made-to-measure plantation shutters across Folkestone, Sandgate, and the surrounding area.

Shutters That Suit Folkestone's Housing Stock

The Leas and clifftop properties — The hotels and substantial Victorian properties along The Leas are among the most architecturally impressive in Kent. Grand sash windows, bay fronts, and in some cases sea-facing rooms where light and privacy both require careful management. Tier on tier shutters in hardwood are the premium choice here — the upper panels open for the view while the lower panels maintain privacy from the promenade below. Moisture resilience matters on the seafront — a good paint finish on hardwood handles this, or ABS where the exposure is significant.

The Harbour and Creative Quarter — Converted commercial buildings, Victorian warehouses, and a mix of residential and live-work properties with often non-standard window configurations. Custom shaped shutters handle unusual openings; tracked systems suit wide industrial-scale glazing.

Sandgate Road corridor and Cheriton — Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing with bay windows. Full height or tier on tier in MDF for the majority of properties.

Inland — Cheriton, Hawkinge, and the Alkham Valley — Period farmhouses, village properties, and the newer residential estates along the M20 corridor. Full height MDF for newer builds; hardwood and custom shapes for period rural properties.

Materials and Finish Options

Every shutter is cut to your precise window dimensions. We don’t adjust standard sizes — everything is made to measure from the start.

Hardwood — Sustainably sourced real wood. Warmest look and feel, best for period properties. Available in any paint colour or stained finish, including bespoke RAL shades if you want to match existing woodwork exactly.

Engineered MDF — The most practical choice for most homes. Dimensionally stable, takes paint exceptionally well, and at a lower price point than solid wood without compromising on appearance.

Waterproof ABS — Fully waterproof. The right choice for bathrooms, kitchens, en-suites, and rooms with high humidity such as riverside properties. Identical appearance to painted MDF but will never warp or swell.

Louvre sizes: 47mm, 63mm, 76mm, and 89mm. Larger louvres let more light through when open and give a more contemporary feel. Smaller louvres suit traditional sash windows and period interiors. We’ll advise which works best for your specific window during the survey.

Tilt rod options: central rod (traditional look) or hidden tilt (clean, contemporary — the louvres adjust via a small magnet mechanism with no visible rod).

Why Folkestone Homeowners Choose VIP

Folkestone presents some of the most interesting installation challenges in Kent — The Leas’ grand Victorian seafront properties, the Creative Quarter’s converted commercial buildings, and the contemporary new builds inland all require genuinely different approaches. We’ve worked across all of these property types and we don’t apply a one-size-fits-all solution.

The seafront location also raises practical questions about material choice that some companies gloss over. We’ll be direct about what we recommend for a property with direct sea exposure and why. That honesty — combined with over 100 five-star reviews across Kent — is what Folkestone customers consistently tell us made the difference.
